Don't be a slave to your stuff. The amount of money it costs to move and store worthless garbage far outweighs the cost of dumping it and getting new ones when you're settled. Even a 5X10 storage unit cost around $90 a month. That's almost $1100 a year. Is that sofa and dresser worth $1100? Of course not. You could replace all the big stuff for about $300 off Craigslist. Keep it simple.

If you're ever consulting the Yellow Pages for something, never call the first entries that have a bunch of "A"s before their name, such as AA Frank's Reptile Accupuncture. This is a cheap marketing ploy to get a company's name at the beginning of the list. Why do they do this? Because they know that lazy Americans won't go down a list too far. You call one or two reptile accupuncturists, you've had enough. You'll never make it to the Fs.

Never do business with any place that tells you to "Call around, get the best price, then call us and we'll beat it!" I'm not calling all your competitors for you. This isn't my job. How about YOU call all those other places and come up with the lowest price and then I just have to call you?

One size does not fit all.

Alcohol only makes the pain go away for a little while... so make sure you buy enough.

You don't need a $1700 computer to write. Hemingway didn't have a Dell.

Listen to some talk radio once in a while. It doesn't hurt to keep up on hot topics. If you ever do make it into an executive's office, he's already had all the Hollywood talk he can handle. You hold up a short conversation about something else, it'll make you seem like a real person.

Take part in the real world once in a while. It'll give you something to write about.

Have a back-up plan. Many lofty goals are passed over because too much time is spent on the back-up plan, but many dreams die because there's nothing to support them. Dreamers need to eat.

Watch Penn & Teller's Bullshit on Showtime. It'll put things into perspective. And watch Scrubs, too. It's just a great show.
