A word that's been used in Hollywood regarding some recent films is "reimagining." The Planet of the Apes remake was supposedly a reimagining of the original. Whether they pulled it off or not is debatable, however, I liked the word.
I think screenwriters often have to reimagine their initial idea. They might have to write half or two thirds of a script before they start seeing it in a way different from when they began playing with the idea in their heads.
Does it mean that you do a 180 degree turn from your original premise? Maybe. It can also mean that you reimagine what your story is really about. Or you reimagine what your main character really wants. Or you reimagine the way your story ends.
Whether or not reimagining is just a fancy word for rewriting, who knows? But doing it might be something to consider.
